Conformation
One should take the time to read the AKC Standard written for
their particular breed and become familiar it. The judges use
this Standard in determining winners and
making Champions. Dogs should be able to move and be sound.
The standard has major headings :
1. General Appearance
2. Size, Proportion, Substance
3. Head; Expression; Eyes; Ears; Skull; Muzzle; Bite (teeth)
4. Neck, Topline, Body, Tail
5. Forequarters
6. Hindquarters
7. Coat
8. Color
9. Gait
10.Temperament
The dogs are judged by the standard and compete in classes by
a process of
elimination. Once a "Champion" they only compete for
Best of Breed and do not have to be entered in the regular classes.
There are 15 total points required for a "Championship"
which includes 2 "majors" under 3 different judges.
The dogs/bitches are entered in regular classes and the winner
of each class competes for Winners. The final selection for
the judge is Best of Winners, Best of
Opposite Sex, and Best of Breed. The Best of Breed dog/bitch
then goes on to Group and each first place from the group ring
competes for Best in Show.
Showing your dog can be fun but more importantly is necessary
if you are breeding. It proves that your dog has been bred to
the Standard which are written by the
Breed Clubs.
It also says that your dog should be able to perform the duties
and tasks
that it was bred for. The other important thing is that you
get the necessary health
clearances before breeding.
